The Government of India is planning to set up an independent accreditation authority to rate schools, said Kapil Sibal.
Announcing his ministry's 100-day plan for the education sector, the minister said that the present system does not allow a child to get information on the performance and capabilities of a school, reports IANS.
"At present there is no accreditation policy for schools. If any child goes to a school, he has no information how the school is. There is no agency in India to accredit them or give the school a rating," he pointed out.
The Minister also said that the HRD Ministry would explore the possibility of setting up an independent accreditation authority for schools that will have experts and scholars.
"The government will have nothing to do with it," Sibal said adding that it would be on a voluntary basis in the beginning. The step would be taken within 100 days, he added.
He hoped good schools that would like to be accredited would themselves come forward. "And those who would not apply for accreditation, we will know why they are not doing so," he added.
Sibal also promised that the independent accreditation body would not face any "interference from the government".
