Detailed Description
This study focuses on the role of balika sanghas vis-à-vis girls’ empowerment. With the help of a range of tactics that involve various schemes, programmes and trainings, these collectives raise self-worth of their members who are usually in the age group 14-18 years. Covering as many as 17 villages spread across Warangal and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh, qualitative data were collected over a period of eight days. Going by the thesis that social inclusion revolves primarily around parameters like valued recognition, human development, involvement and engagement, autonomy and material well-being, the case study has come up with mixed findings. The balika sanghas have been very successful in enhancing the self-worth of girls, nevertheless, they do not wholly succeed in being socially inclusive for they lack the support of their community. The research also highlights that the conditions of the girls can only be improved by changing mentalities and by creating an enabling environment.
